Free-range words
Stingray is a new bi-annual literary journal for both established and emerging writers from all over the world. Each issue has a different theme, something very simple like ‘travel’ or ‘work.’ The content is then chosen for the writer’s unique and personal response. Reading Stingray is like entering a conversation about a topic you thought was simple, and then realising that it’s not. Fiction, reportage and illustration are all included – in fact, any style which gets the idea across.
Take issue
Issue 1 was published in December 2009 on the theme of ‘community.’ We could list the contents highlighting some very on-trend themes like Hungarian gypsies and some interesting sounding names like Simon Jablonski. However, this publication is not about fashionable ideas.
The theme of Issue 2 is ‘travel.’ Don’t expect it to be full of people waxing lyrical about seeing new places. Travelling can be dangerous, after all: think of the Japanese tourists who are struck by Paris Syndrome each year! It will be out in July 2010.
Live words
The first issue of Stingray was launched with an event which included readings by poets, authors and also the editor’s housemate from a Nigel Slater cookbook, in a voice which simply oozed hot butter. We believe in making the spoken word fun, unexpected and relevant – making words come alive. Who is to say the drunk person on the bus making a speech about community is not a performance poet? Well, perhaps most of the ‘audience,’ but we can’t always choose not to listen. We are planning to host more events which everyone can relate to.
